Freer Percussion products are well known around the world for being the most unique and creative designs, materials and covering techniques. It’s our goals to have FP remain first in its class and a clear leader in the orchestral percussion market.
Usage: Perfect legato/mellow general timpani mallet that rolls easily and provides excellent bottom and fundamental.
Covering: Cartwheel with German felt (thicker felt than #3)
Tone Color: Legato general, warm round and darker sound than #3. Sonorous sound with round beautiful tone quality.
The new Freer Percussion Cloyd Duff #4 legato/general model is a more legato/softer general than the Duff 3. This new replica version of the Cloyd Duff series features a 13.5” American hickory shaft with a CNC machined felt core at a very specific durometer to match the originals. The cartwheel covering is soft German felt (thicker than FPCD #3), tightly sewn for a super clean sound, yet producing a softer and warmer/darker tone than the FPCD3 mallets. The hickory shaft compared to bamboo offers a completely different balance, feel and rebound off the head. Even the nuts on these new models are replicas of the originals, made on CNC for consistency and precision. Excellent for Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Brahms, Sibelius, Bruckner, Strauss and Wagner among many others. Warm and round but still an excellent legato general mallet. A necessity for all students and professional timpanists who desire a mallet that has been used and proven for over 75 years. An incredibly versatile, handmade replica timpani mallet made to last. These are the only authentic reproductions of Duff’s original set of mallets available exclusively from Freer Percussion direct.
Hickory shaft, convex felt core extra hard felt cloth cover, staccato mallet. Also known as “Freer greens” these have now found their way into hundreds of timpani players cases and have become a standard for nearly 1000 customers.
Hard German 1mm felt with no base felt on 1.5” x 3/8” convex felt core. Clear articulate stick with a lot of fundamental and more bottom to the sound. A pointed sound that retains it’s warmth and pitch at all times. Excellent choice for many sections of Beethoven 9, Sibelius Symphonies, Schumann and Schubert Symphonies as well as Bartok and other 20th century repertoire. Excellent in the percussion section or ensemble for tom tom and other drum parts.
*Note the nickname “super 2.” This model was inspired by my Duff #2 model but with a core that is one and a half times the size and on a bamboo shaft.
Tonkin felt large cartwheel
Soft German felt thick covering soft stick with 1mm base felt on 1.5” x ½” felt core. This is basically the Tonkin version of my BCS stick. Has more weight in the front and even more bottom to the sound. Excellent roller and a must have for any Tchaikovsky, Mahler or Bruckner symphonies. Recommended for the intro to Wagner Funeral Music and Strauss Death and Transfiguration as well.
