Freer Percussion authentic Cloyd Duff #5 replica.
These are the only authentic and licensed reproductions of Duff’s original set of mallets available exclusively from Freer Percussion direct.
One of the most imitated American timpani mallet lines in history, this new replica version of the Cloyd Duff #5 model features the following:
11mm – 11.5mm premium bamboo shaft 15″ long
Hand finished with four coats of sealer, lathed round butt end and laser engraved logo
1″ CNC machined maple core for precision and consistency with slightly rounded edges
Base felt is a high grade all wool adhesive felt 1mm thick
Parachute covering is soft German felt tightly sewn, mounted and finished completely by hand by one Amish family with great attention to details. All mallets personally inspected and tested by Tom Freer
This model produces a very clean and clear sound. Easy articulation and clarity in all registers of all timpani regardless of make, model or type of heads. Its sound can be described as round, warm, clean and of a beautiful quality. A necessity for all students and professional timpanists who desire a mallet that has been used and proven for over 75 years. An incredibly versatile, handmade replica timpani mallet made to last your entire career.
1" diameter wood ball with tight chamois cover. Chamois is always carefully selected for matched thickness and evenness. Warmer than #1 and still very bright and clear. Perfect for Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and much more. Also excellent for percussion instruments and chamber music.
1" diameter wood disc with multiple felt layers and very thin soft German felt ball cover. Very bright and clean sound without being slappy and harsh. No voicing is done to this model. Warmer sound than #2, a great all around hard stick with a pretty sound.
Hard German 1mm felt with no base felt on 1.5” x 3/8” convex felt core. Clear articulate stick with a lot of fundamental and more bottom to the sound. A pointed sound that retains it’s warmth and pitch at all times. Excellent choice for many sections of Beethoven 9, Sibelius Symphonies, Schumann and Schubert Symphonies as well as Bartok and other 20th century repertoire. Excellent in the percussion section or ensemble for tom tom and other drum parts.
*Note the nickname “super 2.” This model was inspired by my Duff #2 model but with a core that is one and a half times the size and on a bamboo shaft.
Tonkin felt large cartwheel
Soft German felt thick covering soft stick with 1mm base felt on 1.5” x ½” felt core. This is basically the Tonkin version of my BCS stick. Has more weight in the front and even more bottom to the sound. Excellent roller and a must have for any Tchaikovsky, Mahler or Bruckner symphonies. Recommended for the intro to Wagner Funeral Music and Strauss Death and Transfiguration as well.
